Build-up… Restraint… Outpouring…
Dopamine is about surplus: an energy surplus, an emotional surplus…
It is about how this surplus gradually builds up, drop by drop, up to the point where it remains sensibly contained; and finally, how it overflows.
Whether it is in the form of a sudden impulse (“I don’t know what came over me”), or a slow acting out, all these excesses of desire, anger, enthusiasm and failure… come to life and take shape with lightning speed and awkwardness. Dopamine is located, more specifically, on this narrow frontier, the edge separating apparent self-control from that short-circuited zone where fuses always end up by blowing.
